A safer departure timeline
Work backwards from the gate, not the runway.
Two hours before: arrive at the airport during normal domestic travel. Add more time for school holidays, major events, unfamiliar airports or mobility assistance.
Before the airline cutoff: complete passenger acceptance and bag drop. Being in the parking area or security queue does not count as checked in.
Before gate closure: be physically present at the correct gate with your boarding pass and identification ready. Gate changes can happen after check-in.
After a delay: do not assume a delayed departure moves the check-in cutoff. Follow the airline’s direct instruction.

Deadlines are unforgiving.
How early should I arrive for a domestic flight in South Africa?
Two hours before departure is a sensible target at major airports, especially with checked baggage. This is planning guidance, not the airline cutoff. The formal cutoff can be 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
What happens if I miss the check-in cutoff?
The airline can treat you as a no-show and refuse travel. Fare value, rebooking and refund treatment depend on the airline and fare conditions.
Does online check-in mean I can arrive at the gate at the last minute?
No. You still need time for bag drop, security and the boarding-gate closure. A boarding pass does not override airport or airline deadlines.
Are check-in times the same for every airport?
No. Airline rules, airport procedures and route type can differ. Use the airline’s official guidance and your booking confirmation as the final authority.
