Live fare search
Compare fares with baggage included.
Baggage cost is part of the fare, not separate from it. Search your route and weigh the total, not the headline price.
The master table
Domestic baggage rules at a glance.
| Airline | Free cabin bag | First checked bag | Extra checked bag | Overweight / heavy bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FlySafair | Confirm current cabin allowance on the selected fare | Price varies by booking channel and timing — confirm in Manage Booking or checkout | Confirm the current per-bag price before payment | Heavy-bag and airport charges can apply; verify the current tariff |
| LIFT | 7kg cabin bag + personal item | R200 when added during booking; selected fare bundles include checked baggage | R200 per bag during booking; R300 after booking or at the airport | R200 heavy-bag fee for 23–32kg |
| Airlink | Confirm cabin allowance for the aircraft and fare | Economy allowance is generally included; confirm the ticket shown | Excess is route- and weight-dependent | Confirm the current excess-baggage rate before travel |
| SAA | 8kg cabin bag on standard domestic economy | 1 × 23kg on standard domestic economy | Per current SAA excess-baggage tariff | Per current SAA excess-baggage tariff |
| CemAir | Aircraft-specific cabin limits apply | Allowance depends on the selected fare and route | Confirm the current excess rate with CemAir | Confirm aircraft and weight limits before travel |
Airline baggage rules and prices can change without notice. The allowance and fee displayed for your selected fare at checkout or in Manage Booking is the controlling amount.
Primary-source checks: LIFT baggage · SAA baggage. Always confirm the fare-specific allowance at checkout.
The real comparison
The cheapest airline changes once you add a bag.
This is the trap most fare comparisons miss. FlySafair Lite and LIFT Economy No-Bag fares look cheapest in search results because they exclude checked baggage — while an Airlink or SAA fare that looks R300 more expensive already includes a checked bag (23kg in SAA’s published domestic economy allowance). The moment you're travelling with a suitcase, the ranking can flip completely.
The rule that saves real money: compare the final fare after baggage, seats and change conditions, not the headline fare alone.
Run one search for the current available options, then compare the baggage-inclusive total of the strongest results.
Compare total prices on your routeCarrier by carrier
The fine print that catches travellers out.
| Airline | What to know before you pack |
|---|---|
| FlySafair | Low-cost bundles can exclude checked baggage. Add extras online and verify any current fuel surcharge and airport fee before paying. |
| LIFT | Checked baggage is cheaper when added during booking than after booking or at the airport. Fare bundles differ, so confirm what is included. |
| Airlink | Allowance is commonly bundled, but aircraft type and route can affect cabin handling. The ticket and current baggage policy control. |
| SAA | Standard domestic economy currently includes one 23kg checked bag and an 8kg cabin bag. Confirm the selected fare before payment. |
| CemAir | Regional aircraft can have tighter cabin-storage limits. Keep valuables and medication in a small personal item and verify the fare allowance. |
Grounded carriers — Mango, Kulula and others still listed as bookable on outdated flight websites — obviously publish no current baggage fees. Their actual status is covered on the grounded airlines guide.
Money rules
Three baggage rules that prevent avoidable costs.
Add bags online, always. The airport counter is the most expensive place in South Africa to buy baggage — FlySafair's counter price is more than double its online price. Bags can be added after booking through each airline's manage-booking portal, right up to a few hours before departure.
Weigh the bag at home. A bathroom scale works: weigh yourself, weigh yourself holding the suitcase, subtract. Heavy-bag penalties (R200–R250) are pure waste when shifting 2kg into your cabin bag at home costs nothing.
Respect the 7kg cabin limit. Domestic carriers actively weigh cabin bags at busy gates, and an overweight carry-on gets checked into the hold at the airport rate. The free underseat personal item — laptop bag or handbag — is the pressure valve: use it for the dense stuff like chargers, books and shoes.
Check the baggage allowance behind the price
The selected fare and operating carrier determine the allowance. Compare the same bags on each sector, and add only charges missing from the flight total. A fee that has not been confirmed is not a zero.
| Carrier | Decision to check | Primary source |
|---|---|---|
| FlySafair | Lite and Standard have different checked-bag inclusion. Compare the fare family and the channel where an extra bag is purchased. | FlySafair baggage information |
| Airlink | Confirm the economy fare category and route allowance on the ticket; do not assume every economy fare has the same weight limit. | Airlink baggage information |
| CemAir | Confirm the selected route, fare and aircraft cabin limits. Check domestic, regional and interline conditions separately. | CemAir baggage information |
| LIFT | Check whether the fare includes a checked bag. Verify the current charge and bag dimensions before adding an extra. | LIFT baggage information |
| SAA | The published domestic economy table lists one 23 kg bag. Confirm the ticket, route and any exception before applying an allowance. | SAA baggage information |
A baggage-price change worth checking
FlySafair’s fee-change notice effective 19 August 2026 lists R185 for the first checked bag and R375 for a bag added at the airport. Its add-on table still shows R350 for the airport first bag. Confirm the charge for the channel and service you will use before paying; these airline-published figures are not a guaranteed Travelstart quote.

Baggage FAQs
Questions travellers ask.
Which South African airline has the cheapest checked baggage?
There is no permanent winner because fares, baggage prices and promotions move independently. Compare the final total for your dates and confirm what the selected fare includes.
How much is a checked bag on FlySafair in 2026?
FlySafair baggage prices can change by channel and timing. Confirm the current amount in the live booking flow or Manage Booking rather than relying on an old static fee.
Is hand luggage free on all domestic airlines?
Domestic fares normally include a cabin allowance, but the weight, dimensions and personal-item rules differ. Confirm the allowance on the selected fare and operating airline.
What happens if my bag is overweight?
Heavy-bag or excess-kilogram fees can apply, and a single checked bag is generally capped at 32kg. Check the airline’s current tariff and repack before reaching the airport where possible.
Is it cheaper to fly with hand luggage only?
It can be cheaper for short trips when the selected base fare excludes checked baggage. Compare the cabin limit against what you genuinely need and price the final total before paying.
