About the airline
The flag carrier, rebuilt for a new era.
South African Airways — SAA to everyone, FlySAA online — has flown since 1934 and remains the country's national carrier. After entering business rescue in 2019 and grounding during the pandemic, SAA resumed flying in September 2021 and has been rebuilding its network route by route ever since. Today it operates around 19 aircraft to 17 destinations, including intercontinental services to Perth and São Paulo.
SAA is a full-service airline: fares include checked baggage, cabin baggage and onboard catering, and the airline has been a Star Alliance member since 2006, with Voyager miles earnable across the alliance. On domestic trunk routes it competes with FlySafair and LIFT; once you add bag fees to the budget carriers' prices, SAA's total is often more competitive than the headline fares suggest.
One thing SAA no longer has is a low-cost arm — Mango stopped flying in July 2021 and never returned. For former Mango routes, compare the current operating airlines in the live search rather than relying on old carrier pages.

Is FlySAA the same as SAA?
Yes — FlySAA is simply the web name South African Airways uses for its booking site (flysaa.com). SAA, South African Airways and FlySAA all refer to the same airline.
Does SAA include checked baggage?
Yes. As a full-service carrier, SAA fares include checked baggage (23kg in the published domestic Economy allowance; confirm your ticket), cabin baggage and onboard refreshments. Add the budget carriers' bag fees before comparing prices like for like.
What is SAA Voyager?
Voyager is SAA's frequent flyer programme. Members earn miles on SAA and across Star Alliance partners, redeemable for flights, upgrades and more. SAA has been a Star Alliance member since 2006.
What happened to Mango Airlines?
