Regional & smaller-city routes

Regional routes worth comparing.

Smaller-city routes are often flown by a single airline, so fares move less — but booking ahead still matters. These corridors connect Johannesburg and Cape Town to Kimberley, Upington, Polokwane, Richards Bay, Margate, Mthatha and more.

Safari & Kruger corridor

Fly straight to the Kruger.

Skukuza lands you inside the Kruger National Park itself, while Hoedspruit (Eastgate) and Nelspruit (KMIA) serve the private reserves and southern gates. Airlink operates most of these routes, so seats are limited — book early in peak safari season (May–September).

Paying less

How to pay less for domestic flights.

Fly mid-week. Midweek and off-peak departures are often worth comparing, while Friday and Sunday evening demand can push prices higher. The exact result still depends on the route and date. The full day-by-day calendar — including the payday effect and 2026's long weekends — is on the cheapest days to fly guide.

Compare several weeks ahead as a starting point, and search earlier for December, Easter and the June–July school holidays when demand is concentrated.

Compare the total, not the headline. FlySafair and LIFT sell checked bags as extras, while SAA, Airlink and CemAir include them on most fares — a "more expensive" ticket is sometimes cheaper once your bag is added.

Treat airline sales as a bonus rather than a strategy. Promotional seats are limited, while a live comparison shows the best available final total for your actual dates.

Domestic flight comparison workflow

Compare the trip in the order that prevents false savings.

CheckWhy it matters
1. RouteStart with the exact airport pair. JNB and HLA, or HDS and MQP, are not interchangeable.
2. ScheduleEliminate flights that break your transfer, meeting, lodge or check-in plan.
3. Total fareAdd checked baggage, seats, change conditions and payment-stage extras.
4. Ground costInclude parking, shuttle, car hire or the final road transfer.
5. RiskValue direct routing and protected connections when disruption would be expensive.

Domestic flights FAQs

Questions travellers ask.

Which airlines fly domestic routes in South Africa in 2026?

FlySafair, LIFT, Airlink, CemAir and SAA operate scheduled domestic services. Their networks and frequencies differ, so compare the carriers available on your route and date.

What is the cheapest domestic airline in South Africa?

No airline is cheapest on every route or date. Low-cost fares can lead on headline price, while an included checked bag or more flexible rules can make another airline cheaper overall. Compare the final total for your exact trip.

What is the cheapest day to fly domestically in South Africa?

Midweek and off-peak flights are often useful to compare, but there is no guaranteed cheapest day across every route. Search nearby dates and compare the same trip at different times.

How far in advance should I book domestic flights in South Africa?

Compare several weeks ahead as a starting point and search earlier for December, Easter, school holidays and long weekends. Airline inventory and route demand matter more than one universal booking window.

Do Mango and Kulula still fly?

No. Kulula (operated by Comair) stopped flying in May 2022 and the company was liquidated. Mango has been grounded since July 2021 and is now in a final wind-down — its last refund claim window closes 22 September 2026.

Is checked baggage included on South African domestic flights?

It depends on the airline and fare bundle. FlySafair and LIFT both offer fare options with and without checked baggage, while Airlink and SAA generally include checked baggage on domestic Economy fares. Confirm the allowance shown before payment.
