The weekend premium
When the weekend actually costs more.
| Slot | What it costs you |
|---|---|
| Friday 15:00–19:00 out | Peak of the week — business traffic and weekenders collide. Highest buckets sell here first. |
| Sunday 15:00–20:00 back | The return-leg equivalent — everyone flies home at once. |
| Saturday morning out | The valley. Demand dips hard after Friday night — regularly the cheapest weekend slot. |
| Monday first flight back | Beats Sunday evening on price and still gets you to work — the 06:00 trick. |
Same weekend, same route — the difference is purely which buckets you buy. Thursday-evening departures are the in-between option: pricier than Saturday, cheaper than Friday peak.

The weekend playbook
How to fly the same weekend for less.
Fly out Saturday morning. You lose Friday night away but regularly save enough to cover a night's accommodation — the Saturday-morning valley is the single biggest weekend saving.
Come back Monday at dawn. The first Monday flight undercuts the Sunday-evening rush and lands early enough for most work days. Pack accordingly and go straight in.
Book 3–4 weeks out. Weekend cheap buckets on popular routes sell earlier than mid-week ones. For long weekends, stretch that further — see the 2026 long-weekend calendar.
Travel hand-luggage only. Two nights fits in a cabin bag — skipping the checked bag saves on FlySafair and LIFT fares. Full breakdown on the baggage fees guide.

| Period | What to compare |

| December 2026 | Compare your preferred dates around 16, 25 and 26 December, including the return and airport transfers. |
| Easter 2027 | Good Friday is 26 March and Family Day is 29 March. Check nearby dates if your plans are flexible. |
| School breaks | Use the relevant school calendar. Public-school dates do not cover every independent school or regional country. |

Weekend Flight Deals FAQs
Questions travellers ask.
What is the cheapest way to fly for a weekend in South Africa?
Fly out Saturday morning instead of Friday evening, and return on Monday's first flight instead of Sunday evening. Those two shifts avoid both weekend peaks and regularly save hundreds of rand on the same route.
Why are Friday evening flights so expensive?
Business travellers heading home and weekenders heading out compete for the same 15:00–19:00 departures, so the cheap fare buckets on those flights sell out first.
How far in advance should I book weekend flights?
Three to four weeks for a normal weekend. For long weekends around public holidays, book six to eight weeks out — demand spikes on those dates.
Which route is best for a quick weekend away?
Johannesburg–Durban is a classic short-break route: the flight is brief, competition is strong and several departure times are usually available. Compare the exact weekend dates live.
