Last-minute flights in South Africa — how to pay less when you can't book early.
Last-minute domestic pricing is unpredictable and depends on remaining inventory, route frequency and demand. High-frequency routes, off-peak time slots and airline price wars all leave cheap seats behind. Here's where to look and how to book them.

One search shows FlySafair, LIFT, Airlink, CemAir and SAA side by side — when you book late, the gap between airlines is at its widest.

Why late fares spike
How fare buckets work — and why waiting costs you.
| What happens | |
|---|---|
| Bucket pricing | Airlines sell each flight in fare buckets, cheapest first. Once a bucket sells out, the price steps up — it may remain high once lower fare buckets sell. |
| Inside 14 days | The cheap buckets are usually gone on business routes; inside 7 days you're shopping the top buckets. |
| The exception | Off-peak slots — early morning and midday, nearby midweek dates — can sell more slowly, so their cheap buckets survive longest. |
| Don't wait for drops | SA domestic airlines rarely dump prices at the last minute. If you see a workable fare today, waiting may reduce the remaining choice. |

Booking in the next few days
Five moves that cut a last-minute fare.
Take the ugly time slot. The 06:00 departure and the 11:00–14:00 midday flights sell slowest — they hold cheap buckets days after the 07:30 and 17:00 peaks have sold out.
Shift a day if you possibly can. Even inside a week, a Tuesday or Wednesday flight regularly beats the Friday equivalent by hundreds of rand — the pattern holds right up to departure. See the cheapest days to fly guide.
Check both Joburg airports. If your route touches Gauteng, price O.R. Tambo and Lanseria — Lanseria's lower demand often means later availability in the cheap buckets.
Compare all five airlines, always. Late booking is when the spread between airlines is widest — one carrier with an empty flight will undercut the rest by a wide margin, and you can't predict which.
Book the moment you decide. Lower fare buckets can disappear as inventory sells. A fare you can live with now is the fare to take.

Questions travellers ask.
Are last-minute flights ever cheap in South Africa?
They can be workable — rarely rock-bottom. Cheap fare buckets sell first, so late bookers buy higher buckets. Your best odds are high-frequency routes like Johannesburg–Durban, off-peak time slots, and comparing all five airlines at once.
When do domestic flight prices start climbing?
Fares typically climb from about 14 days out and steepest inside 7 days, especially on business-heavy routes and peak slots like Friday afternoons.
What is the cheapest way to fly tomorrow?
Take the earliest or a midday flight, compare available airlines in one search, and if you are on a Gauteng route, price both O.R. Tambo and Lanseria. The spread between airlines is widest at the last minute.
Do airlines drop prices at the last minute?
On South African domestic routes, rarely. The bucket model means prices step up as seats sell — waiting for a late drop usually costs more, not less.
