Route decision guide
Choose the right Johannesburg airport and the right fare.
This corridor has strong competition, but a cheap headline fare can stop being cheap once you add the wrong airport transfer, checked baggage, seat selection or restrictive change rules. Compare the full trip, not only the first price shown.
LIFT publishes Johannesburg–Cape Town services from O.R. Tambo, while FlySafair also sells a separate Lanseria–Cape Town route. JNB and HLA are different airports: confirm the airport code before payment and again before leaving for the airport.
| Decision | What matters | Best check |
| Departure airport | JNB offers the broadest airline choice; HLA can suit parts of northern Johannesburg. | Compare the airfare plus road distance, parking and transfer cost. |
| Fare bundle | Low-cost base fares may exclude checked baggage or preferred seats. | Price the bag, seat and change conditions before choosing. |
| Flight time | Published schedules are around two hours, but airport and boarding time matter. | Compare departure time and total door-to-door journey. |
| Peak pressure | December, Easter, school holidays and long weekends can tighten inventory. | Search early, then compare nearby dates rather than trusting a fixed “best day”. |
