Airport overview
What this airport is best for.
O.R. Tambo International is the main scheduled passenger airport for Johannesburg and the country’s largest connecting hub. ACSA describes it as Africa’s biggest and busiest airport, serving domestic, regional and long-haul airlines. For domestic travellers, its main advantage is choice: more airlines, more departure times and direct links to large and regional destinations.
Use JNB when route frequency, airline choice or regional connections matter most. Compare Lanseria as well when you live north or west of Johannesburg and your destination is available from HLA. A slightly higher airfare can still be cheaper after parking, fuel and transfer time are counted — and the reverse is also true.

Market analysis
Compare O.R. Tambo with the airport your trip needs
O.R. Tambo and Lanseria are separate airports. Compare the airport code, departure time and total ground journey instead of treating every Johannesburg fare as interchangeable.
Allow for the journey to O.R. Tambo from your actual address, parking or bag drop, and security before the airline deadline. For an early departure, get a transfer quote for that time rather than a daytime estimate.
If you are heading to Sandton, Randburg, Pretoria or another Gauteng destination, compare the entire transfer from JNB. Returning to a parked car at Lanseria adds a separate journey; a Johannesburg label alone does not identify the airport.

Getting there and away
The ground journey is part of the booking.
ACSA lists public transport, shuttle, taxi and car-rental options from the airport. Follow official signs to authorised pickup areas rather than accepting unsolicited transport offers inside the terminal. If you are connecting between JNB and HLA, leave a large buffer: they are separate airports on different sides of the Johannesburg region.
For domestic flights, two hours before departure is a sensible planning target. The airline’s formal cutoff may be 30 to 45 minutes before departure, but traffic, parking, bag drop and security happen before that deadline.

Airport FAQs
Questions before departure.
Is O.R. Tambo the same as Johannesburg Airport?
O.R. Tambo International (JNB) is the main Johannesburg airport, but Johannesburg is served by two airports. Lanseria (HLA) is a separate facility roughly seventy kilometres away with its own route network. Always confirm the three-letter code on your itinerary rather than assuming that a Johannesburg booking means JNB.
Why do JNB fares change so much by time of day?
Available fares can differ by departure time, date, carrier and fare family. Compare the options that fit your trip, including bags and ground transport, rather than relying on an assumed cheap time of day.
Is JNB the same as Johannesburg International Airport?
Yes. JNB is the code for O.R. Tambo International Airport, previously called Johannesburg International Airport.
Is O.R. Tambo or Lanseria cheaper?
It changes by date and route. JNB has more carriers and frequencies; Lanseria may reduce ground travel for northern Johannesburg. Compare the final trip cost, not airfare alone.
How early should I arrive at O.R. Tambo for a domestic flight?
Two hours before departure is a sensible planning target, especially with checked baggage. The airline’s formal cutoff may be later, but traffic, bag drop and security queues happen before it.
Where can I check JNB flight status?
Use ACSA’s official live flight information or the operating airline’s flight-status page.
