The booking decision

Stop asking for the perfect price.

The useful question is whether the fare is acceptable for your route, date, airport and baggage needs. A cheaper flight at an impossible time, from the wrong airport or without the bag you need is not a better deal.

Compare at least three departure days when possible. On weekend trips, test Thursday night or Saturday morning against Friday afternoon, and Monday morning against Sunday evening.

Once the fare sits inside a reasonable range and the schedule works, book it. Waiting for a dramatic drop is a gamble against shrinking seat inventory.

Compare the cheapest days to fly

Compare dates without a guaranteed-cheapest claim

Start with your own travel dates, then compare nearby departures and returns with the same passengers, baggage and stops. A public holiday or school break is a reason to check dates; it is not proof that every flight will cost more.

Calendar dates to include in a fare comparison
PeriodWhat to compare
December 2026Compare your preferred dates around 16, 25 and 26 December, including the return and airport transfers.
Easter 2027Good Friday is 26 March and Family Day is 29 March. Check nearby dates if your plans are flexible.
School breaksUse the relevant school calendar. Public-school dates do not cover every independent school or regional country.

Booking timing FAQs

Timing matters, but flexibility matters more.

How far in advance should I book a domestic flight in South Africa?

Start comparing when your dates are possible. Check nearby alternatives, bags and fare conditions; this guide does not establish a guaranteed cheapest number of weeks before departure.

Is booking extremely early always cheapest?

No. Airlines can open schedules before demand is clear, and promotions can appear later. The practical goal is to compare early enough to understand the normal range, then book when the fare and schedule are acceptable.

Should I wait for a flight sale?

Only if your dates are flexible and the current fare is not already good. A sale may exclude your route, date, baggage or preferred time, and waiting can cost more when low inventory sells out.

Do flight prices drop at midnight or on a specific day?

There is no reliable universal reset time. Prices move with inventory, demand and airline decisions. Compare multiple departure days rather than chasing a booking-hour myth.
