Booking the holiday dates

How to win the long-weekend fare game.

Book 6–8 weeks out, minimum. On public-holiday weekends the cheap buckets go far earlier than normal weekends. For the festive dates, treat 10–12 weeks as the window — which means Christmas flights should be booked around September–October.

Fly the shoulder of the peak. For Women's Day, the Friday 7th evening and Saturday 8th morning departures carry very different prices — the pattern from the weekend deals guide applies double on holiday dates.

Buy one leave day well. Heritage Day on a Thursday is 2026's best leave-day arbitrage: Friday 25 September off turns one leave day into four days away.

Book the return leg first if you must choose. On holiday weekends the homebound crush (Sunday/Monday evening) sells out before the outbound — lock the return, then flex the outbound around price.

Long Weekends 2026 FAQs

Questions travellers ask.

What long weekends are left in South Africa in 2026?

Women's Day (Saturday 8 to Monday 10 August), Heritage Day (Thursday 24 September — take Friday as leave for four days), the festive Friday-to-Sunday of 25–27 December, and New Year's weekend of 1–3 January 2027. Reconciliation Day falls midweek on Wednesday 16 December.

When should I book flights for Women's Day weekend 2026?

Immediately. The 8–10 August weekend needs no leave days, so the whole country travels — and it is now inside the 6–8 week window where cheap buckets disappear fastest.

Is Heritage Day 2026 worth taking leave for?

Yes — it is the best leave-day value of the year. Heritage Day falls on Thursday 24 September, so one leave day on Friday the 25th creates a four-day weekend in spring weather.

Why are long-weekend flights so much more expensive?

Demand from the entire country compresses into the same two travel days in each direction. Airlines sell the same buckets as always — they just sell out far earlier, leaving only the expensive ones by the time most people book.
