Flights to the Garden Route: land near the part you are visiting.
George is the main Garden Route airport, but Gqeberha can work for the eastern end and Cape Town for a longer road trip. The correct airport depends on your first and final stop.

Choose by itinerary
The Garden Route is a corridor, not one destination.
George Airport is the strongest default for George, Wilderness, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn and much of the central route. Gqeberha can suit Addo and an east-to-west itinerary. Cape Town makes sense when the road trip itself begins in the Western Cape.
For Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, compare George with Gqeberha based on flight price, arrival time and the direction of the full trip.
Airport comparison
Best airport by Garden Route travel pattern.
| Airport | Often best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| George (GRJ) | Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness, Oudtshoorn, Knysna | Fewer airline choices than Cape Town |
| Gqeberha (PLZ) | Addo, Gqeberha, eastern Garden Route and one-way road trips | Longer drive to central/western Garden Route |
| Cape Town (CPT) | Winelands plus a west-to-east road trip | Long drive before reaching the Garden Route |
| Hoedspruit connection | Combined safari and Garden Route on selected direct schedules | Specialist frequency; exact dates matter |
Road times vary with stops, weather and holiday traffic. Use the real itinerary rather than a single destination label.
Search method
Compare open-jaw flights when the road trip is one-way.
A useful construction is flying into Cape Town or George and returning from Gqeberha, or the reverse. This can remove backtracking but may increase one-way car-hire fees.
Search a return first, then test two one-way flights. Include baggage, car-hire drop fees and the driving day saved.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask before booking.
Which airport is best for the Garden Route?
George is the main default, but Gqeberha or Cape Town can be better for one-way road trips and the eastern or western ends.
Is George Airport close to Knysna?
George is commonly used for Knysna, but compare the full transfer and Gqeberha alternatives for your itinerary.
Can I fly into one airport and out of another?
Yes. Search two one-way flights or a multi-city trip, then include one-way car-hire fees.
Should I fly to Cape Town and drive?
It works when Cape Town and the Winelands are part of the trip. For a Garden Route-only visit, George can save substantial road time.
