George Airport is the main air gateway to the Garden Route, serving George, Wilderness, Mossel Bay and the wider Southern Cape. It is a practical alternative to a long drive from Cape Town when your trip is centred on the Garden Route rather than the city.
Compare the airfare with the full ground journey. A slightly higher fare into George can still be the cheaper trip once fuel, tolls, car-hire days and the six-hour road journey from Cape Town are included.

George is a leisure airport with a frequency problem
George Airport is the gateway to the Garden Route, and its demand profile is straightforwardly leisure-driven: the December holidays, Easter, and a steady flow of golf, conference and retirement-belt travel through the shoulder months. There is very little of the institutional or industrial base that steadies fares at inland regional airports.
Pure leisure demand means pronounced peaks and genuinely soft troughs. Outside the holiday windows this can be one of the better-value regional airports in the country. Inside them, it competes with the whole of the domestic market for the same fortnight.
The operational point matters more here than the pricing one. George runs limited daily frequency compared with the trunk network, and it is a small terminal serving a large tourist region. When a flight is cancelled or delayed, the recovery options are thin — the next departure may not be the same day. Anyone connecting onward, or arriving for something with a fixed start time, should build in a buffer rather than assume the schedule.
The other Garden Route consideration is that George is not always the closest airport to your actual destination. For the eastern end of the route, compare the drive from George against alternatives before assuming it is the obvious choice — the airport that produces the cheapest fare and the airport that produces the cheapest trip are not always the same.
