Flying with pets on South African airlines

Pet travel is not a normal baggage add-on. Airlines use different cabin, hold, cargo and partner arrangements, and availability can be limited by route, aircraft and temperature.

Airline differences

Do not assume every pet can travel in the cabin.

LIFT advertises selected dog-friendly flights for small dogs meeting its cabin criteria. FlySafair works with BidAir Cargo PetLounge on selected routes.

Airlink and SAA publish live-animal processes that generally require advance arrangements, suitable containers and documentation. Aircraft and destination restrictions can override a general policy.

Before booking

Confirm the complete pet journey.

QuestionWhy it matters
Is the pet accepted on this exact flight?Rules can vary by route, aircraft and operating date.
Cabin, hold or cargo? The process, container and handover point differ.
What documents are required?Vaccination, veterinary and destination documents may be checked.
Is the connection on one ticket?Separate sectors can create incompatible pet-handling arrangements.
What happens in extreme weather?Airlines may restrict carriage to protect animal welfare.

Get written confirmation for the exact flight. Do not rely on an old social-media answer or a policy for another route.

Carrier and comfort

Measure the pet before buying equipment.

Use an airline-approved container with enough ventilation and space for the animal to stand and turn where required. Label it as instructed.

Prepare water, feeding and medication only according to veterinary and airline guidance. Sedation can carry risks and should not be improvised.

Connection risk

A direct flight is usually simpler for the animal.

When a direct option exists, compare it against a cheaper connection. Longer handling time and transfers can increase complexity.

For international travel, verify destination and transit rules with the relevant authorities as well as the airline.

Common questions

Answers before you search.

Which South African airline allows dogs in the cabin?

LIFT advertises selected dog-friendly flights for small dogs meeting its conditions. Confirm the exact flight and carrier requirements before booking.

Can pets fly on FlySafair?

FlySafair provides a pet-travel option through BidAir Cargo PetLounge on selected routes. Confirm availability directly.

Does SAA allow pets in the cabin?

SAA states that ordinary pets are not permitted in the cabin, with exceptions for qualifying service animals. Other pets use approved hold or cargo processes.

How early should I arrange pet travel?

As early as possible. Capacity, documentation and route approval can take time and are not guaranteed by buying a passenger ticket.

Use current inventory

Find the route, then confirm the pet.

Compare passenger flights first, but obtain airline approval for the animal before finalising the journey.
