Wrong name on a flight ticket? Fix the right type of error.
A spelling correction and replacing the traveller are not the same request. Contact the ticket issuer early, match the identification document and do not assume available airlines permits a full passenger change.

Define the problem
Correction, legal name update or passenger substitution.
A minor spelling error may be handled as a correction. A legal name change can require documents. Replacing the booked passenger with someone else is a different request and can be restricted or repriced.
Give the provider the exact name shown on the accepted travel document. Do not guess which part can be ignored.
What the provider checks
The ticket structure can make a simple typo complicated.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Operating airline | Its name policy must allow the correction |
| Ticket issuer | The airline or agent must service the ticket |
| Multiple airlines | Every carrier segment may need approval |
| Codeshare | Marketing and operating carriers can differ |
| Check-in status | Changes can be harder after check-in opens |
| Supporting document | Legal changes may need evidence |
Do not create a second booking until the original provider explains the options and unused ticket value.
After the correction
Read the reissued itinerary character by character.
Confirm the passenger name, dates, airports, baggage and ticket number. Save the updated confirmation and take it to the airport with the matching identification.
If a correction cannot be made, compare the cost of a new ticket against any refund or unused value on the original.
Error triage
Describe the problem precisely when requesting help.
| Situation | What to explain |
|---|---|
| Small spelling error | Show the booked name and the identity-document spelling. Ask whether the airline treats it as a correction and what evidence is required. |
| Legal name changed | State that the traveller is the same person and prepare the official documents linking the former and current names. |
| Different person needs to travel | Ask specifically about passenger substitution. Do not describe it as a typo; many tickets restrict or prohibit transferring the booking. |
| Several airlines or tickets | Identify every ticket number and operating carrier. A correction accepted on one booking may not automatically update another. |
Contact the issuing provider as soon as the error is noticed. Do not create a second booking until the first ticket's options and refundability are understood, or you could pay twice without solving the original problem.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask before booking.
Can I correct a spelling mistake on a flight ticket?
Often a minor correction is possible, but the process and fees depend on the airline, issuer and ticket.
Can I transfer my flight ticket to another person?
Not always. A passenger substitution is different from a spelling correction and may be restricted.
Does the ticket name need to match my ID?
Yes. Use the accepted identification document as the reference for the passenger name.
Who changes the name if I booked through an agent?
Contact the ticket issuer shown on the confirmation. The agent may need airline approval.
