Margate serves the KZN South Coast with a seasonal, holiday-shaped schedule. Fares and frequency here swing harder across the calendar than almost anywhere else in the country.

Airport overview
Who should use MGH?
Margate Airport is a small regional airport serving the KZN South Coast. Its value is convenience: it places travellers close to Margate and surrounding coastal towns without the longer road transfer from King Shaka.
Compare the Margate fare against a Durban flight plus car hire, fuel and road time. The cheaper ticket is not always the cheaper total trip.

Margate is the most seasonal airport in South Africa
Margate Airport serves the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, and it has the sharpest seasonal profile of any commercial airport in the country. Its purpose is holiday traffic to the coastal strip, and outside the holiday season there is very little else driving demand.
In practice that means the airport operates in two entirely different modes. Through December and the peak holiday windows, demand concentrates hard into a small facility with limited capacity. Outside those windows, scheduled service is minimal and the practical question is often whether a convenient option exists at all rather than what it costs.
This makes Margate the clearest case in the network for comparing the airport against the drive. King Shaka to the South Coast is a manageable road journey, and for much of the year that combination offers more departure choice, more carriers and more resilience than the direct option. Through peak, when South Coast accommodation is full and everyone is moving at once, the direct flight becomes far more valuable — and correspondingly harder to secure.
Practical consequence: if you are travelling to the South Coast in December, treat Margate as a scarce resource and book on the earliest possible lead time. Any other time of year, price Durban plus the drive first.

Total-trip decision
The airport choice can change the real price.
Do not compare airfare in isolation. Add the road transfer, parking, car-hire days, tolls and the value of your time. A regional airport with a higher ticket can still produce the cheaper trip.
Also check the exact airport code on the itinerary. City names can hide different airports, and Johannesburg in particular requires care because O.R. Tambo and Lanseria are separate.

Should I fly to Margate or Durban for the South Coast?
