Skukuza Airport guide (SZK).
Skukuza is inside Kruger National Park — you land within the reserve itself, not near it. That is a genuinely different proposition from Hoedspruit or KMIA, and it comes with restrictions worth understanding first.

Airport overview
Who should use SZK?
Skukuza Airport is inside the Kruger National Park area and is designed for travellers whose final destination is the park or nearby Sabi Sand reserves. The airport can reduce transfer time dramatically for the right itinerary.
Choose SZK for park-focused trips where your lodge or gate transfer lines up with Skukuza. For wider Mpumalanga travel, Kruger Mpumalanga Airport may offer more practical road connections.

Skukuza only works when the geography works
Skukuza is the only South African commercial airport inside a national park, operated in partnership with SANParks and sitting within the Kruger itself. That is a genuine advantage and a genuine constraint at the same time.
The advantage is transfer time. For a traveller heading to a lodge in the central Kruger or the adjoining Sabi Sand reserves, landing inside the park can remove hours of road travel at both ends of the trip. On a short safari, that is not a convenience — it is the difference between three usable game drives and five.
The constraint is that the advantage collapses completely if your destination is not aligned with Skukuza. The park is very large. A lodge in the north, or a trip that includes anything outside the park, turns the inside-the-park landing into a long internal drive at restricted park speeds, which is slower than the equivalent distance on a public road.
So the correct order of operations is: fix your lodge and gate first, then choose the airport, then compare fares. Doing it the other way round — finding the cheapest Kruger fare and working backwards — is how travellers end up paying for a transfer that costs more than the fare they saved. Where the geography does not line up, Kruger Mpumalanga with a hire car is usually the honest answer.

Total-trip decision
The airport choice can change the real price.
Do not compare airfare in isolation. Add the road transfer, parking, car-hire days, tolls and the value of your time. A regional airport with a higher ticket can still produce the cheaper trip.
Also check the exact airport code on the itinerary. City names can hide different airports, and Johannesburg in particular requires care because O.R. Tambo and Lanseria are separate.
