How to check a flight status in South Africa
The operating airline is the first source of truth for a delay, cancellation or gate change. Use the flight number, booking reference and airport board together rather than relying on an old timetable.

Need an alternative flight?
Check the current status first. When rebooking is required, compare the replacement options for your route and date.
Fastest method
Start with the airline operating the aircraft.
Open the operating airline’s official status or manage-booking tool. A ticket sold under one airline code can still be operated by another carrier, so check the “operated by” line.
Search with the flight number where possible. Route-only searches can be misleading when several flights operate on the same day.
Status checklist
Use three sources in the right order.
| Source | What it tells you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating airline | Official operational status, rebooking instructions and direct notifications | First |
| Airport departures board | Gate, terminal and local departure status | Before leaving and at the airport |
| Booking email or app | Your booking reference, flight number and contact details | To identify and manage the trip |
Third-party trackers can be useful, but the airline and airport remain the sources to act on.
When something changes
Do not book a replacement before reading the airline message.
A schedule change, delay and cancellation are not the same event. Follow the operating airline’s instructions before buying another ticket.
Keep screenshots, receipts and written communication if the disruption creates costs. Entitlements depend on the cause, airline terms, route and applicable law.
Before departure
Make your contact details usable.
Ensure the booking contains a mobile number and email address you can access while travelling. Check messages before leaving for the airport.
For a connecting itinerary, confirm every sector. A late first flight can affect the remaining journey even when the later flight still shows on time.
Common questions
Answers before you search.
What is the best way to track a South African flight?
Use the operating airline’s official status tool with the flight number, then confirm the airport departure board.
Can I trust a third-party flight tracker?
Use it as a secondary indicator. Act on information from the operating airline or airport.
What if my ticket shows two airline names?
Check which airline is listed as the operating carrier. Its operational rules and status updates usually control the flight.
Should I buy a new ticket when a flight is delayed?
Not immediately. Read the airline’s message and rebooking instructions before creating a separate booking.
Use current inventory
Compare a replacement only when needed.
Use live inventory after confirming the airline’s disruption options and your original ticket conditions.
