O.R. Tambo or Lanseria: choose the airport, not just the fare.
Johannesburg has two airports in common domestic searches. The cheaper ticket can become the expensive trip when it leaves from the wrong side of Gauteng.

The core difference
JNB wins on network. HLA can win on convenience.
O.R. Tambo is South Africa’s largest hub and offers the broadest domestic and regional network. It is usually the stronger choice for connections, route frequency and airline choice.
Lanseria is smaller and can be more convenient for parts of the north-western Johannesburg and Pretoria market. Its route network is narrower, so the saving depends on whether the exact flight and schedule fit.
Door-to-door maths
Add the transfer before calling a fare cheaper.
| Decision factor | O.R. Tambo (JNB) | Lanseria (HLA) |
|---|---|---|
| Route network | Broad domestic and regional coverage | Focused domestic network |
| Connections | Best for onward connections | Usually point-to-point |
| Airport scale | Larger; allow more processing time | Smaller terminal experience |
| Ground transfer | Better for the east and many central corridors | Can suit north-west Johannesburg and parts of Pretoria |
| Best comparison | Fare + parking/transfer + connection value | Fare + transfer saving + schedule fit |
Traffic changes quickly across Gauteng. Use a realistic travel-time buffer for your departure period.
Booking rule
Never book “Johannesburg” without checking JNB or HLA.
Search systems can group both airports under Johannesburg. Read the airport code on every sector before payment, especially on return trips where the outbound and inbound airports can differ.
Changing airports during a connection requires a road transfer across Gauteng. That is not a normal airside connection and should only be booked with substantial time and a clear transport plan.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask before booking.
Is Lanseria the same airport as O.R. Tambo?
No. Lanseria uses HLA and O.R. Tambo uses JNB. They are separate airports in different parts of Gauteng.
Which Johannesburg airport has more flights?
O.R. Tambo has the broader airline and route network and is the main hub for connections.
Is Lanseria always cheaper?
No. Compare the final fare, route availability and ground transfer. Convenience can be the saving even when the airfare is similar.
Can I connect between JNB and HLA?
Only by road. It is an airport change, not an airside connection, and requires a large time buffer.
